Logitech Introduces ScanMan(R) EasyTouch Boardless
Hand-Held Grayscale Scanner
"Next Generation" Scanner Features Parallel Port Interface,
New Case Design; Includes Caere's(R) OmniPage(R) Direct
AnyFont(TM) OCR Software for Logitech
Fremont, Calif. -- June 28, 1993 -- Logitech is announcing
ScanMan EasyTouch, a boardless, 256 grayscale,
Windows(TM)-based hand-held scanner. Available in late
August at a list price of US$399, the ScanMan EasyTouch
package includes Logitech's FotoTouch(TM) Version 1.2 Color
Image Editing Software and OmniPage Direct AnyFont OCR
Software for Logitech, developed by Caere for Logitech
scanners and tailored to the special needs of hand-held
scanning. The parallel port interface of ScanMan EasyTouch
makes scanning available to all users, including those with
laptop machines and others who do not wish to open their
machines to install hardware.
ScanMan EasyTouch features a totally redesigned case, which
reflects Logitech's continuing concern with ergonomic
design. Users hold the unit with the hand extended straight
out from the wrist, a position which is more natural and
comfortable. To facilitate straight, smooth scanning, the
main roller is now made of a polycarbon material which can
be more precisely machined to perfect roundness.
ScanMan EasyTouch plugs directly into the parallel port of a
computer. A special pass-through adaptor permits the user to
operate a printer through the same parallel port without
disconnecting the scanner. Programmability of the scanner
head enables the setting of resolution, scan mode, and
contrast through software, resulting in a near-buttonless
head (start/stop button only).
The TWAIN-compliant scanning software included with ScanMan
EasyTouch contains Logitech's AutoStitch feature, which
automatically merges multiple strips to produce images up to
15 inches wide. In addition, this and all other Logitech
software for Windows, including FotoTouch Color and OmniPage
Direct AnyFont OCR Software for Logitech, now feature an
online, context-sensitive graphical help system.
Logitech has announced it will bundle FotoTouch Color Image
Editing Software with all its Windows-based scanners. This
application, which evolved from the original award-winning
FotoTouch software, is both TWAIN-compliant and an OLE
(Object Linking and Embedding) server. It features an
extensive set of basic editing tools, selection effects, and
the ability to open multiple images onscreen and cut and
paste among these. In addition, a new feature, printer
profiles, has been added. Through printer profiles,
FotoTouch Color optimizes tone and contrast for specific
printer types and brands.
"Today, only two percent of the installed base of personal
computer users own a scanner, so there's a tremendous
untapped market out there," says Molly Carlson, Logitech
product manager. "We believe the ability to easily integrate
images into a document without having to open up their
computers or worry about DMA channels and interrupts will
help to bring scanning into the mainstream of personal
computing. Moreover, the other main market for this product,
portable computers, promises to grow at an extremely healthy
rate over the next few years."
System Requirements for ScanMan EasyTouch include an
IBM-compatible AT with a 386SX processor or above, 4 MB RAM,
5 MB free disk space, DOS 3.1 or higher, a VGA or better
graphics card, Microsoftr Windows 3.1, and a Logitech or
compatible pointing device.
Logitech manufactures and markets "Senseware" -- products
designed to give "senses" such as sight, sound, and touch to
the computer, making human-to-computer communication more
intuitive and natural. Logitech International, the financial
holding company for the Logitech Group, is traded publicly
in Switzerland on the Zurich and Geneva exchanges. With
operational headquarters in Fremont, Calif., the group
maintains manufacturing facilities in Fremont, California;
Hsinchu, Taiwan; Shanghai, China; and Cork, Ireland; and
offices in major cities in the U.S., Europe, and the Far
East.
